Reed Making Curriculum

As bassoonists, it is important that we learn to make reeds that support our embouchure and instrument process. My collegiate curriculum includes an extra hour per week of reed-making troubleshooting. The first semester of the first year of study will cover the basics of making reeds beginning with GSP cane, either bought from me or from an outside source. Rieger 1A or Sakakeeny Van Hoesen shapes will be used. In the following three semesters until the end of the second year, students will be required to stay with the shape they began with. After reed making skills have been deemed sufficient, students will be allowed to experiment with different shapes and styles of reed making to find what works best for them.
